Choosing the right rice for your dish

Not all rice behaves the same in the pan. Long grains stay loose and fluffy, while short, starchy grains turn creamy or sticky. That difference decides whether your curry, risotto or sushi turns out the way you want.

Basmati rice and jasmine rice

Basmati rice has long, slender grains and a light, nutty aroma, which makes it the classic choice for Indian curries and biryani. The Tilda Basmati Rice 5 kg is a solid size for families and small kitchens, and the India Gate Basmati Rice Exotic is another option in the same size. Jasmine rice, also called fragrant rice, is slightly softer and suits Thai and Chinese dishes. Try the Royal Orient Premium Jasmine Rice or the Royal Thai Perfume Longgrain Rice for larger volumes.

Risotto rice, sushi rice and sticky rice

For a creamy Italian risotto you need a short grain that releases starch, such as arborio or carnaroli. The Riso Scotti Carnaroli is a classic choice, and Cascina Belvedere even has a ready-to-cook risotto with porcini mushrooms. Making sushi at home or in a restaurant? The Itamae Premium Quality Sushi Rice comes in a 10kg bag. Glutinous rice, or sticky rice, is used for Thai desserts like mango sticky rice: see the Royal Thai Glutinous Rice.
